Dreht Euch nicht um

1997 Installation in the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Bonn

For his exhibition at the Rheinisches Landesmuseum, Werner Haypeter summoned on board the artists Wolfgang Nestler and Paul Schwer. Together they hit upon the exhibition title "Don’t turn around".

For the show "Dreht Euch nicht um", Werner Haypeter’s idea of removing all subsequent additions and remodeling sections in the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Bonn in order to exhibit in the original spatial conception of the time the museum was built, namely the 1960s, may truly be designated as radical.

In keeping with his notion of getting to the constitutive heart of things, as well as with his relationship to material, for which he foregoes the non-essential and accepts the necessary, he has discarded the ballast of later changes in use and the adjustments that resulted from the tastes of the time.

Haypeter’s serious works are well thought out constructions. Numerous immanent references to lengths, widths and volumes imbue them with an inner balance. The logic of derivations he makes use of in his works, he also finds in the neglected building frame. Thus, the exhibition shows a remarkable analogy between the claim derived from its location and the reaction to it.
